All three symphonies debuted in a single creative flurry, 1876 to 1877.

Consummate journalist & author,Larry Tye shares about his new book, DEMAGOGUE: The Life and Long Shadow of Senator Joe McCarthy, full of lessons completely applicable to today, especially considering that the McCarthy playbook was passed directly to his assistant, Roy Cohn, and from Roy to Donald Trump. Larry Tye makes history accessible & enthralling, and serves it up for the betterment of the world. Larry worked at the Boston Globe and a number of other newspapers before writing 8 books (as of the present moment) and founding the Boston-based Health Coverage Fellowship.

Among her numerous books are Daughters of Mother Earth (paperback as Make a Beautiful Way) and Iroquoian Women: The Gantowisas. She is an Ohio Bear Clan Seneca, community member and lives in her Ohio homeland. She contrasts the all-inclusive indigenous world with hierarchically imposed culture.

The second hour features our first of five hours devoted to the five creative decades of America’s premier jazz composer and band-leader Edward “Duke” Ellington, born 125 years ago (April 29, 1899) and dying 50 years ago (May 24, 1974). This 45-minute segment features his first decade of music, 1925-35, followed by two songbirds who wrote “where are my keys?” songs when they turned 60! The final hour features 20 top songs written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart from 1925 to 1942 in honor of Hart’s birthday (May 2, 1895).

The FAT Music Show is a friendly nod to the much-adored 1970's radio station KFAT in Gilroy, California, which was one of the first national radio stations to feature the Americana musical genre prominently. Hosted by Felton Pruitt, a 30+year radio veteran with stints that include KFAT, XM Satellite, and KVMR; Pruitt includes classic and contemporary interviews (”Chewin’ The Fat”) and live, or in-studio performances from his personal recording archives.

Back in 2020, early in the pandemic, I discovered the music of Raianne Richards and Mark Mandeville and instantly adored it, and had Mark as my Song of the Soul guest. They've just released their new album, Making Promises, and it's more of the folk-centric music they create, with wonderful harmonies, stirring stories, and great instrumentals. Today we're joined by Raianne Richards, joining us from near Worcester, MA. Raianne and Mark are inspirations and dedicated workers for the deep weave of folk music, things like their wonderful Massachusetts Walking Tour and the Blackstone Valley Music School.

This Week: We continue our five Fridays in May with the five stages of Duke Ellington’s 50-year career as bandleader and composer with the peak of his songwriting productivity during his second creative decade, from 1935 to 1945 (coinciding with the Big Band Era). At 4:00, in the second hour, we cover the convergence of the birthdays of Irving Berlin (May 11, 1888) and Fred Astaire (born Friedrich Austerlitz, May 10, 1899) in their movie scores of the 1930s. We also begin a three-part series on the 120th birthday of Thomas “Fats” Waller (May 21, 1904) with 10 unknown songs he wrote with Andy Razaf from 1928 to 1932 as sung by Rebecca Kilgore. Another new series we begin today is the Top 25 songs written in 1924, a century ago, beginning the countdown with songs #15 to 25 – all of them definitive of the Roaring ‘20s.

This Week: We continue our five Fridays in May with the five stages of Duke Ellington’s 50-year career as bandleader and composer with the peak of his songwriting productivity during his second creative decade, from 1935 to 1945 (coinciding with the Big Band Era). At 4:00, in the second hour, we cover the convergence of the birthdays of Irving Berlin (May 11, 1888) and Fred Astaire (born Friedrich Austerlitz, May 10, 1899) in their movie scores of the 1930s. We also begin a three-part series on the 120th birthday of Thomas “Fats” Waller (May 21, 1904) with 10 unknown songs he wrote with Andy Razaf from 1928 to 1932 as sung by Rebecca Kilgore. Another new series we begin today is the Top 25 songs written in 1924, a century ago, beginning the countdown with songs #15 to 25 – all of them definitive of the Roaring ‘20s.
